At Michael Pothos Design, we have gained experience over the years and have been asked many questions. Here’s a list of commonly asked questions that we hope, give you some answers.

The cost of a website can vary depending on numerous factors, just like the cost of a car or home. If you’re interested, we have website packages listed on our Web Design service page for your convenience.

Depending on what website package you choose and how much content there is, it could take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. It’s always best to provide us with all the content that your website needs as soon as possible.

Yes. With any website package you purchase, you can always upgrade it. The price of the upgrade will be the difference from what you previous paid (website only) to what package you would like to upgrade to. Do know that it is always best to let us know ahead of time if you do plan on upgrading your website to ensure a faster upgrade process. The website package that is to be upgraded must be for the same type of website / website business. For example, you cannot first have a basic or advanced website package for a dog grooming business and then decide to upgrade to an e-commerce site selling t-shirts for a side business that has nothing to do with your dog grooming business. Some exclusions apply.

No. As long as you know what you would like to have on your site, we can use placeholder content in the meantime.

Web hosting is a must if you have a website, otherwise your site wouldn’t be available online. Michael Pothos Design offers web hosting which is highly recommended.

You do have the option to go elsewhere to purchase web hosting, but we’ll need access to your server to upload the completed website and also to address any maintenance. Do know that it does make it difficult if problems arise on your website due to conflicts with how your server is setup.

There are times when your website will need an upgraded web hosting package. This could be due to needing more hard drive space, monthly bandwidth, FTP accounts, etc. If you need to upgrade during your annual web hosting, we’ll just have you pay the difference for the rest of that year that you purchased the web hosting. When it comes time to renew your web hosting, you will then pay the new upgraded web hosting package.

Our answer is typically no, but you should still contact us to discuss exactly what it is you need. It’s actually cheaper and less of a headache to start fresh than it is to update or complete an exisiting website.

Mobile-Responsive, mobile-friendly or responsive design is a technique used to create a website that will work and function nicely on desktop, tablet and mobile. Instead of having multiple versions of the same site for different devices, it’s one single site that dynamically changes its layout and styling.

Yes. Michael Pothos Design exclusively uses WordPress, which is the leading CMS currently in use on the internet. However, for our Basic Site Web Design Package, we use custom-coded files to ensure a budget-friendly experience.

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) software that allows you to manage and edit the text and images on your website. It’s open-sourced and community developed, meaning anyone is free to build their website on top of the software.

Yes. A lot of design companies won’t mention recurring costs until it’s too late. At the least, you will need to pay for web hosting, annual domain name registration, domain privacy (if needed), and an annual trusted CA signed SSL certificate (if needed).

Michael Pothos Design offers web hosting services to its clients along with an SSL certificate.

Domain name registration and domain privacy are not handled by Michael Pothos Design. It’s easier for a client to purchase those separately as they own and control their domain name. However, we do offer assistance when trying to purchase a domain name.

Contact us immediately. If your site is hosted with Michael Pothos Design, we can almost always resolve the issue within a reasonable amount of time.

If you’re hosted with a third-party, it’s more difficult to address what the issue is and in some cases could be on their end. In any case, we’ll try to find out what went wrong and let you know.

Yes. We ask all of our clients for a 50% deposit for any project before work starts. If it’s an hourly based project, such as graphic design, we usually give an estimate on how long it should take for the project, and the total amount of the estimated hourly project would need to be paid first. Any time spent over the initial estimated hours will need to be collected just before delivery of the project.

Yes. We offer sets of blocked hours at a discounted price. For more information, please contact us.

While many of our services are budget-friendly, hosting costs can be a little daunting. The reason for this is due to our costs for running our servers. Now, there are other hosting companies such as GoDaddy, Bluehost, and HostGator, to name a few that you are welcome to use. However, we do not recommend going with these companies unless you are comfortable with their services and limited features which can be frustrating.

We see your website as your online storefront. The hosting for it should be just as important as the website itself. We strive to have your site load quickly, with security and backups in mind. Additionally, you won’t have to deal with the headache of those other companies since our team will be handling all technical aspects.

Other hosting companies may have cheaper hosting rates, but you pay a-la-carte for everything you need at first. Most of the time afterwards, you will probably need additional features which will cost your business hundreds more each year. We include these features such as website security, speed, and SSL certificates at no additional cost.

Most of the time when you host with a standard hosting company, they will do very little to maintain your site with your hosting. Any updates that your hosting needs will be ignored. However, with us, we make sure that the updates for hosting are up-to-date and we do everything we can to fix any errors that may arise with your hosting experience. Since your website will be hosted with us, it is a lot easier and faster for us to solve the issue than hitting road blocks with another hosting company.

Additionally, if you experience problems with your hosting, you will be dealing directly with us and not some foreign customer service representative that knows nothing about your site.

Yes. While hosting with Michael Pothos Design, you can have up to 50 email accounts on any of our hosting packages. Since you have cPanel access, you could set up your own email accounts. But we do offer email account creation at $10 per Webmail account if needed. If you would like to transfer your email account to use Webmail on your hosting, there is also a $20 transfer fee for each email account with up to 1GB of data transferred. Each GB over is $10.

Website maintenance involves keeping a website up-to-date and running smoothly. This may include tasks such as removing spam comments, fixing broken pages or links, updating software, themes, and plugins, and much more. Think of it like taking your car to the mechanic for maintenance, although it is a lot more technical.

Website support includes adding, changing, or removing images, changes and updates to content, adding, changing, or removing elements, adding, changing, or deleting web pages, modifying site navigation if needed, installing and setting up new plug-ins if needed, and fixing any errors that arise on the site within the Developer’s ability to do so.

If you have a website and you always want to make sure that it is up and running with no errors, you will want to invest in getting website maintenance and support. We provide a variety of website maintenance and support packages to choose from. If you just need regular maintenance or for us to take care of a lot more, we got you covered.

We have different packages that you can choose from for your website maintenance and support needs. Starting out for all packages, we include:

  1. Monthly Software, Theme, and Plugins Updates — We go through every month and ensure that all of these items are up-to-date without any errors on your site.
  2. WordPress Core Updates — With WordPress websites, there are core updates that enhance the security, code, and in general how WordPress functions. We ensure that at least once a month, your WordPress version is up-to-date and without affecting your site. We create a a local backup before we update WordPress as in some rare instances, it could potentially break your WordPress website.
  3. Malware & Spam Removal — Believe or not, but sometimes, even with all the security features that are added onto your site, malware and spam tend to find a way in. We take every precaution to ensure that your site does not get infected, but in rare cases it can happen. If your website has commenting enabled, chances are you will be receiving spam comments. We go through and remove these. Secondly, if there ever is malware on your site, we’ll do our best to remove it. We have fixed malware infected sites before and know the drill. However, if a website is heavily infected with malware, we move into our next phase which is restoring a backup.
  4. SSL Checks — With our web hosting packages, we offer FREE SSL certificates. These are assigned automatically to your site, and renew on their own. However, sometimes when they expire and auto-renew, they fail. We go in and re-submit the SSL renewal. On top of that, we also check to make sure that all of the links/pages throughout your site have a valid https:// in the URL.

We will let you know if you are in need of more support hours than what’s available on your specific plan. You can either choose to upgrade to the next package or you can just purchase the hours at a discounted rate, depending on the website maintenance and support package you have.

Yes. You can get a discount on hourly rates for anything as long as you have a website maintenance and support plan with us.

You can cancel your plan at any time if you are paying monthly. If you are on a yearly plan and want to cancel, you will have to wait until your plan ends. Do know that we do not offer refunds for any services.

Yes. If at anytime you need to upgrade your plan, you can do so. You will have to pay the difference though depending on how many months you have left on your current plan.

No. What you pay is only that. We give you all the logo files you will need and in different formats. The only other costs that you may have to pay would be to copyright your logo.

We try our best at getting you the logo you envision. With each logo design package, we include a number of revisions, which should help narrow down what you are looking for. However, if for whatever reason you are still not satisfied, we always offer more revisions at an additional rate.

For any client, we always welcome their input on what they see as being their identity for their business. It will also help narrow down what it is exactly that you are looking for in a logo.

Every logo varies and on how many revision there are. Typically, the turnaround time for a logo to be completed can take a few days.

The first and foremost thing you need is what exactly will be your business name or DBA. We have had clients in the past that have told us what they have as their business name, only to find out that another business has that same name. Make sure you do your research beforehand.

Secondly, we need to know what it is your business does. This way, your logo isn’t just some random illustration. We try to include meaning behind each logo.

Once we have your business name, discussed a concept, and received 50% off your initial project cost, we start the design process.
